Colon Hydrotherapy
History of the Colon Cleanse
The Colon Cleanse can be associated with Ayurveda medicine which dates back to at least six or seven thousand years and is described as what is known as a ‘bastis’. A bastis is basically an enema that can either include oils or water and herbs. By using nature’s things like bladders from a goat or a cow as a container with natural thick straws that were hollow inside that worked as tubing, they administered these bastis to clean the colon.
Going back to Jesus’ time, you can find scenes describing exactly the same methods. The ancient Egyptians also describe colon cleansing as a necessity as well as all major civilizations. When you go back to hospitals reports from the 1920’s, they routinely described administering enemas or so called ‘colemas’, colon hydrotherapy, to wash out the entire colon. Almost every hospital used to have a colonic device.
This changed when antibiotics were introduced. Hospitals and physicians no longer helped their clients clean out their colons. Instead, medications were given to suppress symptoms and diseases rather than dealing with the root causes. Today we have a large population of obese individuals with extremely congested colons, sometimes filled with 40-60 pounds of old fecal matter. In America nearly 70% of the people are either obese or overweight and you can see it starting in the belly area. The colon accumulates with waste matter and accommodates it. No longer are our health care providers reminding clients of the need to clean out the colon before treating anything else.
There are some hospitals in Israel that do not even treat or accept a client unless they can show that they just had a colonic irrigation and that their entire colon is clean. They believe that so many symptoms of illness are related to just blocked colons, extreme constipation and just sluggishness in the eliminative capacity of the body. Once again, cleaning out the body is becoming recognized as necessary for health. Colonic instruments are becoming available again. And as these simple colon cleansing devices once again become popular, more and more people are going back to the traditional colon cleansing method.
How often do you recommend doing a colon cleanse for the average person?
This can depend on what a person is eating and how stressed the person is. We now know that stress inhibits the peristalsis in the body. So a person becomes congested simply by being nervous and anxious… worried about things. It is also determined by a person’s diet. If a person eats a lot of meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cheese and so on, then he/she can expect that the colon clogs up much faster. But on an average, if a person is eating a healthy balanced diet, then every 2-4 weeks is recommended. Depending on how one is feeling… if the belly is starting to protrude and becoming harder, and if gas is common, then, definitely it is time for cleaning out the colon. One should also consider cleaning out the liver with a liver cleanse. Many colon problems result from a congested liver with poor bile secretion. The bile flow is no longer sufficient in order to induce peristalsis which is again a function of bile. If the bile is missing or there is lack of it, then the peristalsis is inadequate and a lot of undigested food remains in the colon and it is not released.
